Best Bioluminescent Caves

Bioluminescent caves take their light from living organisms rather than artificial illumination. The glow-worms of New Zealand and Australia are the most famous; a handful of other sites add their own variations.

Why they glow

Larvae of fungus gnats (Arachnocampa luminosa) hang silk threads coated with sticky droplets, and luminesce to lure flying insects. The chemistry is similar to fireflies — luciferin oxidation.

Photography

Bioluminescent caves require very long exposures (30+ seconds) on sturdy tripods at ISO 800-3200. Most tours forbid all photography to protect the larvae from white light.

When to visit

Glow-worms are year-round but most visible in the dry season (spring/summer in the southern hemisphere) when external moisture does not interfere with their silk.
