Cave Diving Safety Essentials
Cave diving is among the most dangerous adventure pursuits. The overwhelming majority of fatalities are open-water divers without cave training who enter caves opportunistically. Sheck Exley formalised the safety principles after a wave of deaths in the 1970s.
Rule 1: Continuous guideline
Always have a continuous guideline from open water to the exit. The guideline is the only reliable navigational aid in a cave where visibility may drop to zero from silt or torch failure. Never enter a cave without one.
Rule 2: One-third gas reserve
Use one-third of your gas for the penetration, save one-third for the exit, and keep one-third as reserve for emergency. This rule covers the case of a buddy needing to share gas on the way out.
Rule 3: Stay within depth limits
Depth multiplies risk. Narcosis at 30+ metres impairs judgment; oxygen toxicity becomes a concern at 50+ metres. Progressive certification levels match depth allowance to training.
Rule 4: Three lights
A primary light and two backups. Lights fail at the worst possible moment. Without a torch in a cave, you are blind; without training, you are also lost.
Rule 5: Progressive training
Training is layered: Open Water, Advanced, Cavern, Intro to Cave, Full Cave, then specialised (mixed gas, rebreather, scooter). Never skip levels. Most fatalities involve divers operating beyond their certification.
Other safety practices
Buddy team only — no solo cave diving. Pre-dive equipment check. Conservative gas planning. Always file a dive plan with surface support. Never rely on dive computers for primary navigation.
Why bodies are not always recovered
Recovery teams are themselves at risk; some cave passages cannot be safely re-entered. Cave-diving fatality rates are higher than mountaineering on famous routes.
