Top 10 Caves in France
France is the heartland of European cave culture. The Dordogne Vezere valley alone contains 25 decorated caves on UNESCO's World Heritage list, and the Vercors, Pyrenees and Ardeche supply a depth of caving geology that few countries match. The classics below mix Palaeolithic art, deep technical caves and grand show caves.
1. Lascaux IV, Montignac
Karst cave (replica). The original Lascaux closed in 1963; Lascaux IV is the faithful, full-scale facsimile opened in 2016. Tour grade A.
2. Chauvet 2 (Pont d'Arc Cavern), Vallon-Pont-d'Arc
Karst cave (replica). Replica of the 36,000-year-old painted cave of Chauvet, the oldest known figurative art. Tour grade A.
3. Gouffre de Padirac, Lot
Karst cave. A 75-metre vertical shaft drops to an underground river boated for 500 metres past stalactite curtains. Tour grade B.
4. Grotte des Demoiselles, Herault
Karst cave. The vast Cathedral chamber is reached by funicular and houses the famous Virgin and Child stalagmite. Tour grade A.
5. Aven d'Orgnac, Ardeche
Karst cave. Five spectacular halls of giant fir-tree stalagmites, with a modern interpretation centre. Tour grade A.
6. Grotte de Niaux, Ariege
Karst cave. Original Magdalenian paintings of bison and horses, visited in small lamp-lit groups. Booking essential. Tour grade B.
7. Grotte de Clamouse, Saint-Jean-de-Fos
Karst cave. Famed for aragonite needles, helictites, and the Hundred Pillars chamber. Tour grade A.
8. Gouffre Berger, Vercors
Karst cave. A classic deep system (-1,122 m), one of the world's first to exceed 1 km depth. Expedition only, no tourism. Tour grade D.
9. Grottes de Choranche, Vercors
Karst cave. Famous for its delicate fistulous soda-straw stalactites and underground lake. Tour grade A.
10. Grotte de Cougnac, Lot
Karst cave. Genuine Upper Palaeolithic art including megaloceros and ibex, in a quiet rural setting. Tour grade B.
Planning a France cave trip
