Top 10 Caves in Portugal
Portugal's caves divide between the mainland limestone of Estremadura and the volcanic features of the Azores and Madeira. The Algarve sea caves at Benagil are among the most photographed cave entrances in the world.
1. Benagil Sea Cave, Algarve
Sea cave. The cathedral-like dome with a circular skylight, accessible only by kayak, paddleboard or boat. Approach by swimming is now restricted to preserve the cave. Tour grade A.

Karst cave. Connected to Mira de Aire — one of the longest caves in Portugal at over 13 km surveyed. Expedition access. Tour grade D.
9. Furna do Enxofre, Graciosa (Azores)
Volcanic cave. A sulphurous cave-lake at the bottom of a volcanic crater, descended by spiral stairs. Tour grade B.
10. Gruta de Alvados, Estremadura
Karst cave. Small but exceptionally well-decorated show cave near Mira de Aire — fewer crowds, better formations. Tour grade A.
