Cave of Crystals (Naica) Deep Dive
The Cueva de los Cristales — Cave of Crystals — at the Naica mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, contains the largest natural crystals ever documented: gypsum selenite beams up to 11.4 m long and 4 m diameter, weighing up to 55 tonnes each. The cave is one of the most extraordinary geological discoveries of the past 50 years.
Discovery
The cave was found in April 2000 by miners drilling tunnels for silver, lead and zinc at the Naica mine. The pumping operation that drains the mine had inadvertently lowered groundwater levels to expose the crystal chamber, which had been completely water- filled for hundreds of thousands of years.
How the crystals grew
The Naica chamber sits above an intrusion of magma that for millions of years kept the chamber at a constant 58°C. The water above was saturated with calcium sulfate (gypsum) close to its solubility limit; the stability of the temperature over geological time allowed gypsum to precipitate continuously, growing crystals to extraordinary size. Calculations suggest the crystals grew over 500,000 years.
Visiting (or not)
The cave is not open to the public. Conditions inside are extreme — 50°C with 99% humidity, lethal to unprotected humans within minutes. Scientific access requires special cooling suits and breathing apparatus.
Current status
The pumping operation that exposed the cave stopped in 2017 when the Naica mine closed. The cave is now refilling with water and returning to its pre-discovery state. The crystals will resume growing — slowly — under their original conditions.
Why it matters
Naica demonstrated that mineral growth at geological time scales, in geologically stable conditions, can produce structures impossible under any other circumstances. The discovery reshaped understanding of hydrothermal mineral deposits.
